The Loneliness of a Priest and a Monk — a Supportive Prayer
Please open my own heart now, God, to receive the results of this prayer, Your Divine Graces and the fullness of Love.
I accept that I manifested as a solitary priest. I accept that loneliness is not a “specialty” reserved exclusively for consecrated persons.
I completely accept my own life and actions without any conditions concerning being a priest or monk who devotes himself throughout his entire life to God, and I accept all the consequences of this.
I have forgiven everyone who did not know whether to require loneliness from me and from other priests, or whether to rescue us from it. I have completely forgiven myself for the fact that, as a solitary priest and monk, I repeatedly reflected upon my own loneliness and the loneliness chosen by my friends, in my understanding, in accordance with the will of God. I know that I decided to fulfil my priestly vocation in order to devote myself entirely to Jesus, and I ask You, God, to verify all my decisions and their consequences.
I have forgiven myself for the fact that my home became something bordering on a sacristy, an office, a library and a hotel. I have completely forgiven everyone who did not understand me and rejected me as a solitary priest and monk when I decided to continue my solitude in pastoral ministry and in everyday life. I have completely forgiven myself for becoming accustomed to squeezing through crowds, and I have forgiven myself for the fact that, once again isolated at home, I had no one to speak to. I have forgiven everyone who, through the prism of their own loneliness, promotes virtual sermons and catecheses, because there is no testimony in them at all, nor any of their private experiences.
I completely apologize to all those whom I once mocked, discriminated against, harmed and spoke about ironically because they were loners and not only loners. I accept that God may have given us solitude so that we could better understand ourselves, our own Soul and others. I have completely forgiven myself for the fact that, as a solitary priest and monk, I instructed other lonely people how to live in a happy relationship without experiencing for myself what it is like to love and to be loved within my own family given to me by God. I accept that the loneliness of a priest and of all other people is the same; that is, it is quiet, mute and often impossible to translate into words, that this loneliness is profoundly personal and private, and that its true causes may be recognized and worked through with God’s help.
I have completely forgiven myself for the fact that I once had no respect for various young, but also ageing, solitary priests, monks, members of religious orders and not only them. Please, God, verify my view that a human being must sometimes be alone, but should not be lonely, and even less isolated.
I have completely forgiven all those who mocked me as a solitary priest and monk, who discriminated against me, harmed me and spoke about me in various ironic ways. I accept that even a person who functions exceptionally well in solitude needs other people.
I accept that when I celebrated my first Holy Mass, I entered a new reality and tears of joy filled my eyes when, after receiving priestly authority, I stood at the altar for the first time as one possessing the power to transform an ordinary host into the Body of Christ and ordinary wine into His blood. I accept that this was possible at my request, but only together with my personal lifelong loneliness. Please, God, verify the view that a priest’s loneliness is the loneliness of a long-distance runner, which for many is not only an opportunity to reach God, but often also a significant private problem.
Please, God, verify my view that, as a solitary priest, I touch the Body of Christ every day, which constantly motivates me to care for my own holiness and to worry that I may end my struggle with celibacy through a spiritual fall. I forgive everyone who expresses the opinion that a priest is created and called to live in the solitude of his mother’s womb and returns alone to God. I accept those who proclaim that this applies to all people and not only to priests.
As a priest, I accept those who inspired me, initiated me, chose me, called me, sanctified me and consecrated me for a solitary path. I also accept all those who became guardians of my loneliness. Please, God, verify my view that loneliness envelops the existence of a true priest, tears him from the ground on which he grows and brings forth his separateness and uniqueness.
I accept and respect all those whom I inspired, initiated, chose, called, sanctified and consecrated to become solitary priests, monks, members of religious orders and not only.
Please, God, verify me, God, as well as all my inspirers, initiators, guardians, supervisors, controllers and verifiers, and my relationships with all of them. I give You, God, all the sacrifices of my being, experiencing and manifesting, including as not only a lonely but also a somewhat unfulfilled person. In Your grace, God, I resign from the function of guarding the loneliness of others with a whip and severe punishments.
Please, God, verify the fact that I convinced others that God gave us solitude so that we could better understand ourselves and our own Souls, and that the presence of God in the temple fills the absence in my everyday life of another close person and of a family of my own.
Please, God, verify the fact that, as a solitary priest, I chose celibacy, voluntary unmarried life and, to some extent, asceticism, believing that in this way I devoted myself exclusively to serving God and Jesus. Please, God, verify the opinion and view that since some apostles had wives, their successors, meaning priests, cannot have them, because one will either be a good husband and loving father devoted to one’s wife and children, or a good priest devoted to Christ, His Church and His faithful.
Please, God, verify the fact that by vowing celibacy I agreed, among other things, to live eternally in loneliness, without a wife, children or family, and that in this way I committed myself to purity for God and to serving Jesus alone.
Please, God, verify the fact that I gave my heart, which belongs to God, wholly into the ownership of others, thus becoming a solitary priest, monk, lonely person and celibate.
Please, God, verify the fact that, possessing priestly authority, in order to fill the void of loneliness in my life, I stood before the faithful in missionary passion and preached sermons, believing that they needed me and my words rather than Your guidance, advice and suggestions, God. I apologize, God, for the fact that I gave my little heart, which belongs to You, wholly into the ownership of other figures, thus becoming a lonely person. Please, God, verify the fact that in my solitary life I tried to replace for other people a God who seemed distant to them.
I completely accept and understand that only God knows whether and what kind of person and priest I should be, and whether others should become such people or be called to this.
I have completely forgiven myself for the fact that, as a solitary priest, I lost myself, including in the sacraments of penance and reconciliation, dealing mainly with my own and other people’s weakness.
I completely apologize to all those whom, as a lonely person, I instructed on how to live in a happy relationship, without experiencing for myself what it is like to love and to be loved within my own family given to me by God. Please, God, verify my understanding that celibacy means giving oneself completely into the ownership of Jesus and the Church, because one would either be a good husband and a priest “at half strength”, or a zealous priest neglecting one’s duties toward one’s wife and children. Please, God, verify our conviction that loneliness causes us either to burn ourselves out in service to Jesus and Mary or in service to our loved ones. For I once saw that there was only one choice, that only one path and one of two sacraments was available to me: either priesthood or marriage. Therefore, I implore You, God, in Your grace, show me how You Yourself see this and how it truly is.
Please, God, verify the fact that, as a solitary priest, monk or member of a religious order and not only, I receive the support and help of a woman’s hand from my mother and sister or from the housekeeper of my own presbytery.
Please, God, verify the fact that, as a solitary priest and monk, I exposed myself to temptations, sought them out, fulfilled male desires, deceiving myself and everyone around me, while thinking how worthy I was of God’s glory.
Please, God, verify the fact that various people openly or secretly mocked me for being a celibate, ascetic, loner, problematic person and not only.
I have completely forgiven myself for the fact that, while being alone, I was unable fully to experience the power and joy of the priesthood of Christ and Mary.
I completely apologize to You, God, for the fact that at times I went through life unconscious, that I failed to notice Your admonitions and ignored them, that I perceived only the negative aspects of life and did not see and did not want to see how You manifest Your Divine action, Your Divine grace, love and forgiveness in every possible way.
I give You, God, all my desires, missions, trances, hypnosis, programming, agreements and intentions concerning being a loner in the world that You created for full co-creation with God.
Please, God, verify all my trances of admiration and desires to imitate other solitary people, both those known to me and those unknown to me.
Please, God, verify all my own and my Soul’s destructive and devastating intentions, patterns, programs, mechanisms of action and all forms of enslavement which caused me to become a solitary priest, a person living among a crowd of people who are strangers to me.
Please, God, verify all the consequences and causes of my problems in building closer relationships with women, with men, even with children and with all people, problems which result from my being a lonely person and not only from this.
I give You, Creator, all resistance, fears and unwillingness to give You, God, everything that still sustains within me these very fears, feelings of unfulfilment and inner pain that has not yet been soothed.
I know that God Himself always bestows upon me and my Soul a stream of His Divine graces, showing mercy always and everywhere, especially when I myself live and act according to God’s thoughts, words and Divine guidance.
