Financial Greed – intentions

I once received, with great surprise, the information that greed is “not giving to oneself”, and not only not giving to others. The following set was compiled by Małgorzata Krata.

The word “–not” added to some word while working with intentions means that it is worth expressing it also in its opposite, or even finding and saying aloud any synonyms that come to mind together with their opposites.

For example — when saying: being poor, being sick, it is good to say it also with its opposite:
–being poor, being sick, –not being poor, not being sick.

This allows you to move a given pattern as broadly as possible, touching different aspects, including its opposite. It is also worth knowing that Souls often think or claim that they do not have such opposite patterns — for example, that they are not idolaters in a given case (in a given word).

Another example:
A woman’s Soul denies ever being a bad mother. Therefore, adding here the negating form —
not being a bad mother — may allow her to understand the state she is in.
Being a bad mother, –not being a bad mother–
“—Oh, absolutely not, never in my life! These are certainly not my patterns. What I do is my private matter.” [—The Soul very often says or thinks this about itself.]

  1. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that love of money can be described by two terms: cupiditas – lust, desire, and avaritia – greed, and not only; that greed is the desire to obtain goods, whereas miserliness is the passionate urge to keep them as one’s property, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  2. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed is a lack of satisfaction with the current state, and miserliness is a betrayal of generosity, which consists in sharing good with others, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  3. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that anyone, both poor and rich, can excessively desire more, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  4. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that even a poor person can be stingy towards those in need with what he or she possesses, but that the rich, by the nature of things, are more exposed to manifesting greed and miserliness, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  5. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed stands in the same relation to vices as justice does to virtues, and that greed, being a disturbance of balance, is the opposite of justice, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  6. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed lies at the root of many other faults: it causes that instead of love there appears impurity, instead of rest – sloth, instead of satisfying hunger – gluttony, instead of honour – pride, instead of just indignation – anger, instead of appreciation and admiration – envy, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  7. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed combined with envy is particularly dangerous, and that then it is similar to gluttony; but just as gluttony is limited by the capacities of the body, so greed, including financial greed, has no natural limits, and whereas every glutton eventually gets up from the table, the craving for money and things can last forever and even grow along with wealth, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  8. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed and miserliness are traits, sins resulting from one’s worldview and value system, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  9. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that “the greedy man’s eye will not be satisfied with what he possesses, and wicked perversity dries up the Soul”, and that “very many have sinned and fallen for profit and because of profit”, and that much danger and evil arises from wealth, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  10. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that even those who have become rich or have gained everything do not have control over what will happen and are not able to buy what is most essential, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  11. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed is in contradiction with trust, including trust in being financed by God, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  12. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that “the demon of greed usually does not act directly but deceitfully: by darkening the mind it prevents recognition of the passion that should be restrained; it suggests reasons that speak against generosity; it brings thoughts of a long old age, inability to work, the bitterness of being dependent on others, thereby depriving one of energy and motivation to fight greed”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  13. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that wealth is associated only with owning land and not with money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  14. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that (according to the theory of Thomas Aquinas) every sin always has its origin in some natural appetite, and that miserliness is a disordered desire, a greed for money among other things, or for everything that can be measured in money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  15. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that covetous greed is combined with miserliness, with excessive drive to acquire money and accumulate wealth, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  16. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed drains our and others’ strength so much that one cannot then deal with anything else, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  17. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that a miser remains a miser even when he has lost all his goods, just as abstaining from physical acts does not make a libertine virtuous, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  18. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed in fact lies at the root of an unsatisfied need for social advancement, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  19. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that, according to medieval thought among others, greed and miserliness are a kind of idolatry, because they replace worship of God with the cult of mammon, gold, money and bowing down before something that is not worthy of veneration, and cause the deification of money and things that can be bought with money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  20. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed is the search for infinity in the wrong place, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  21. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that for the medieval person among others, money was not so much capital as a pile of precious metal, and that over time money began to be associated with usury, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  22. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that possessing money reduces fear of uncertainty and is to be a means of ensuring control over life, which in today’s world is seen as one of the greatest values, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  23. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that by having financial resources one can buy oneself and one’s family out of any oppression – including boredom, loneliness, anxiety, ugliness, demanding children, unpleasant bosses, every inconvenience, and even ageing and illnesses – and that one can escape from everything and change everything, at least temporarily, as long as one has money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  24. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that it is hard to notice the boundary between reasonable financial prudence and sick passion, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  25. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that today people do not so much value money more as they value everything else less, and that they are not necessarily more greedy than before, but they lack other values that would mitigate greed; where there are no values, money is what counts, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  26. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that only a sense of honour and virtue can limit and regulate love of money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  27. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that money is not a value in itself – it is amoral and by its nature remains outside the sphere of ethics, and only the way we and others use it makes money a medium in moral or correspondingly immoral actions, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  28. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that only the way of earning, obtaining and spending money is subject to evaluation – that money is a serving value and must not be served; it is money that is to serve us, among other things serve efficiently, quietly, without drawing attention to itself, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  29. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that money should be earned without excessive zeal and spent without miserliness and without wastefulness, and that both miserliness and wastefulness mean attributing too much value to money, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  30. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that money enables the exchange of goods and services and thus creates the illusion that it frees us and others from limitations and burdensome dependencies, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  31. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that unlike love or friendship, money exchange allows us to give or receive a controlled quantity, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  32. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that money gives an advantage over another person, even to a fool over a wise man, or to a servant over a master, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  33. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that according to psychoanalysis among others, greed long ago slipped out of people’s control, and miserliness is connected with the so-called “anal type” and as such is not culpable but can only be sublimated; and that according to economic trends, greed can be justified by slogans such as “financial success”, “economic security”, “high standard of living”, “comfortable life”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  34. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that according to the claims of many beings greed is good, because “it produces results, solves problems, gets to the heart of things, reaches the essence of the spirit of evolution; greed in all its forms, from the desire for life, knowledge, to the desire for money, means the progress of humanity” (quote: Gordon Gekko – financier), and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  35. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that money is treated as a means to obtain power and control over our own and others’ fate; that financial success affects the raising of self-esteem and sense of dignity and self-worth, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  36. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed often hides under the cloak of ambition, and unrestrained hoarding and miserliness under the cloak of prudence; and that excess in accumulation often masquerades as protection from anxiety, whereas in fact wealth becomes an object of anxiety, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  37. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that stress connected with living conditions does not in fact decrease with prosperity, and that it is precisely prosperity that constantly incites the desire for everything “More!” – because of the illness of material addiction and the constant sense of lack, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  38. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that classical desire is not bad in itself, and that what is bad is excess, lack of self-control and lack of balance, because greed has no limits; and that we cannot deceive ourselves that after acquiring wealth we will be able to give up greed, because this “More!” strives towards infinity, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  39. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that if we are not able to appreciate what we have now, then why should we appreciate it when there is more of it, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  40. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that we should work on our own “muscle of gratitude”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  41. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that in life it is important to determine not how much more we desire, but how much is enough for us, in the spirit of the principle: “there are two ways to have enough – one is to accumulate more and more, and the other is to desire less”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  42. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that socialism restrains greed, whereas capitalism unleashes it, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  43. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that onto the financial field one can transfer the statement: “Anorexia (financial) can lead to death, which does not mean that obesity (financial) is good”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  44. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that it is difficult to define and establish the boundary between wants and needs: needs are safe and wants are not, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  45. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that it is important to find the golden mean between extreme asceticism with its shortages and wealth with its excess, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  46. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that along with the development of technology and civilisation the bar of needs is constantly raised, and that the driving force of advanced economies is not hunger of needs but appetite that seeks to satisfy ever new wishes, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  47. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that in reality demand follows supply (not the other way round); that advertising, which is the creation of an entire lie out of half-truths, searches for new needs and multiplies to infinity the things that one “must have”, while in fact often they are not needed for anything, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  48. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that the temptation to buy presides over the market; that all people in fact are driven by the need to equal the richer; that financial aspirations are closely connected with comparing oneself with others, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  49. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that the beauty and value of things, objects, events is directly proportional to their price, and correspondingly that it is / may be inversely proportional to their price, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  50. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that “disgust for always the same thing” is one of the basic passions, which causes: infidelity in marriage, the need for something ever new, is a source of heresy in religions, foolishness in counselling, inconstancy in friendships, and the search for ever new stimuli, including financial ones, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  51. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that greed often becomes an occasion for justifying heavy, exhausting work, and then consumption and comforts are felt as rewards, and this is called compensatory consumption, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  52. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that consumers are often more fascinated by the aura of consumption than by the objects themselves – objects are often defined more by what they mean to the buyer than by what they are for, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  53. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that motivation researchers and marketing psychologists explore, among other things, the complexes, weaknesses, aspirations and dreams of the masses of potential buyers, including ours, and then use this knowledge to arouse the desire for consumption, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  54. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that love of things is love of possession, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  55. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that we and others often spend money capriciously and without rational justification, and when emotions subside we wonder “what did we need that for”, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  56. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that from miserliness flow among other things deceit, perfidy, cunning, perjury, unrest, violence and hardness of heart in the face of others’ misery, because for someone who swims in plenty it is hard to imagine that others live in want; and that from greed arises theft, and from petty theft – corruption, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  57. Our being justly outraged at the poverty around us and correspondingly at the wealth around us, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  58. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that moralists for centuries have regarded generosity as the remedy for greed, and that excessive generosity in turn breeds an attitude of entitlement; that this tendency towards entitlement kills motivation and harms the ethics of work, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  59. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that when we and others do not have to earn what we receive, then what we receive we begin to regard as something due, but also less valuable; and that this also causes constant desire for “more” and, ironically, there is then no gratitude for what was received for free, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  60. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that whereas in the past neglect in spiritual development was often excused by the necessity of struggle for survival, people living in abundance today do not in fact use the convenience of a lack of material worries to care for the spiritual side and for spiritual growth, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  61. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that there is a movement of voluntary simplicity, which proclaims that we can live well by limiting resources; and that maintaining balance between lack and excess requires constant attention and effort; and above all that simplicity must not be equated with poverty: poverty does not result from choice and weakens, whereas simplicity is the result of choice and strengthens, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  62. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that people marked by simplicity are not inclined to pretending and also do not see intrigues, conspiracies, manipulations and plots everywhere, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.

Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that simplicity puts things in their proper place and allows us to rejoice in God’s graciousness, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
  64. Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that according to an Eastern proverb “simplicity reveals the master” and is the art of eliminating what is superfluous; that simplicity is the absence of vanity, excess, ostentation, posing, distraction and dishonesty, and that it is what enables direct, creative contact with life, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.

Our, and through us others’, among other things, understanding, experiencing, supporting, blocking, encoding, and not only, that simplicity is the philosophy of a simplified life, a rejection of the cult of money, of harsh competition, of the obsession with success; that simplicity is finding a decent life passion, an attitude of reflectiveness, sensitivity to the small matters of everyday life, and not only; and our, and through us others’, experiencing all the consequences of this.
