But – a conjunction (word) used in prayer
In the Polish language, the conjunction “ale” (“but”) is used when one sentence contradicts another. A more accurate definition is that the word “but” cancels everything that was said before it.
Example from a job interview:
“I would be happy to hire you for this position due to your highest qualifications and skills, but unfortunately at the moment we do not have the financial resources for this. We will call you back in a month.”
“You are a wonderful woman—beautiful, sensitive, intelligent, extremely resourceful. I can say I have never met anyone like you before, but I am looking for a wife with qualities such as…”
Let us carefully consider our statements when asking God for anything.
The word “but”, when directed toward God, may be particularly ill-advised.
