Delighting in One’s Own Suffering (Illness, Poverty). Liberating Affirmations
Delighting in pain (or in one’s own illness, poverty—here one should precisely name the specific limitation), by me and by my Soul, is not needed by us for anything.
I do not have to delight in or take pleasure in my own suffering, nor in the suffering of others.
I do not have to be a trance-dweller of suffering, a lover of my own or others’ pain.
Delighting in suffering and pain is not needed by me or by my Soul for anything.
I am free from intentions, habits, and needs related to delighting in or taking pleasure in suffering and pain.
I understand that pain is pain and is connected only with suffering itself, not with love or the joy of existence—therefore I have forgiven all those who convinced me and my Soul that delighting in and taking pleasure in pain is valuable and worthwhile.

In the back wall of the chapel of the Monastery of Saint Gabriel there were two openings, one close to the ceiling and another at shin height. Toward the end of his life, Saint Gabriel walled himself in there. Food was passed to him through the lower opening, and Communion through the upper one. At times, the holy Father Gabriel felt he was not strict enough with himself, that he was indulging in luxury. Behind that wall he punished the body in order to free the Soul. Then he would press himself into a niche at the back of the cave and spend a month standing. At other times, to remind himself of his own mortality, he would bury himself in that corner.
