I believe that the term “things” refers to forms of life of spiritual beings that projected themselves into matter. They may have been mixtures of human and animal. This caused them not to be respected and to be treated as slaves, machines or “things”. They may also have been Souls which, indulging their material desires, lost freedom of choice and became deeply entangled in the web of matter. There were already readings that explained this, and here is another one:

We find ourselves in a time when it did not require as much effort as today to earn one’s living. Those who were children of the One Law and those who were children of Belial operated “automatons” or “things”, individually or in entire groups, adapted for work in households, on farms or in craft workshops. The matter of these “things”, around which there were so many misunderstandings, became a bone of contention between the children of the One Law and the sons of Belial, because they represented what we now call good and evil, or spiritual thoughts and goals versus material desires and material goals. Thus this being began its experience as one of the children of the One Law or of one purpose. (1968 – 2)
